Muffle tubes for wire and strip annealing
Annealing of wire, thin strip and small-diameter tubes is often carried out inside muffle tubes. The cross-sectional shape of the muffle tube is selected to suit the product being annealed: circular cross-sections for wire and tube, oval or rectangular cross-sections for strip.
FeCrAl alloys offer the best oxidation resistance and are the preferred material for muffle tubes in most furnace atmospheres. In cracked-ammonia atmospheres, where FeCrAl alloys are attacked by nitrogen, high-nickel alloys such as Alloy 800HT or Alloy 600 are used instead. 253MA is a suitable choice for temperatures below 900°C.
