Molybdenum disilicide — Kanthal Super 1700 for the highest operating temperatures

Kanthal Super 1700 — MoSi2 composite

Molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) materials are used for applications that exceed the capability of metallic alloys. Kanthal Super 1700 is a composite protection tube material for use in oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures up to 1700°C (3090°F).

The material consists of a molybdenum disilicide matrix reinforced with alumina (Al2O3) fibres. At high temperatures in oxidizing atmospheres, a thin layer of SiO2 glass forms on the surface, providing excellent protection against further oxidation.

Key properties

  • Maximum operating temperature: 1700°C (3090°F) in oxidizing atmospheres
  • Atmosphere: Oxidizing (air, O2); not suitable for reducing or nitrogen-rich atmospheres at high temperatures
  • Good resistance to: Dry or moist air, CO2, SO2-containing gases
  • Tube dimensions: Straight tubes up to 2 m in length
  • Delivery: 3–6 weeks depending on specification

Kanthal Super 1700 tubes are used as protection tubes for thermocouples in furnaces operating at temperatures where metallic alloys cannot provide adequate service life. Typical applications include glass melting, ceramic firing, and high-temperature laboratory equipment.

Kanthal Super 1700 is a trademark of Kanthal AB.
